Beatrice Bebe Maria Vio: Italy's Fencing Superstar with No Limbs

From Tragedy to Triumph

Beatrice "Bebe" Maria Vio is an Italian Paralympic fencer who has overcome tremendous odds to become one of the most successful athletes in her sport. Born with meningitis at the age of 11, Vio lost both of her arms and legs below the elbow and knee. But instead of letting her disability define her, she chose to defy the odds and pursue her passion for fencing.

Overcoming Adversity

Vio began fencing at the age of 14, using prosthetic legs and a special fencing wheelchair. Her determination and natural talent quickly propelled her to the top of the sport. In 2016, she won the gold medal in individual foil at the Rio Paralympics, becoming the first Italian woman to win a fencing gold at the Paralympics. She also won two gold medals at the 2019 World Para Fencing Championships.
